Michele S. Shaffer, 60, Vero Beach

Michele S. Shaffer of Palm Bay and Vero Beach died Saturday, Oct.  10, 2009 at her home. Miss Shaffer was born October 3, 1949 in Charleston, W.V. and moved to Palm Bay three years ago from Vero Beach. She had been a teacher at Highlands Elementary School in Vero Beach and a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Vero Beach. Survivors include her sister Debbie McKenna of Vero Beach;  brother George Shaffer of Ellijay, Ga.; two nieces; a nephew; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was predeceased by her parents Roy and Lillian Shaffer. A memorial service will take place 2 PM, Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the First Church of the Nazarene in Vero Beach. Arrangements are under the direction of Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach, Florida. Condolences may be sent through www.seawindsfh.com/obit.php

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." 11-year-old breaks into church, steals laptop on Christmas Day

GIFFORD — An 11-year-old who deputies said broke into a church and stole a laptop on Christmas Day, was detained. Deputies also arrested the boy's mother after saying she failed to report the boy as missing. The Gifford youth told deputies he stole the $700 laptop because "he wanted something to play with," reports show. Deputies said the juvenile was a runaway. An arrest report noted the incident took place at St. Peter's Missionary Baptist Church, located just south of St. Peter's Academy. Both facilities have the same address at 4250 38th Avenue, Gifford. ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life. "He was well-liked by teammates and was extremely coachable. His coaches and teammates are taking it pretty hard," Sebastian River High School Athletic Director Jessica Upchurch said.
