The Atlantic Classical Orchestra announces 20th anniversary season

VERO BEACH — The Atlantic Classical Orchestra under the baton of Music Director Stewart Robertson, is celebrating its 20th Anniversary Season in 2009-10. Vero Beach concerts are held at 8 p.m. at the Waxlax Center for the Performing Arts at Saint Edward’s School.  Tickets are $40 for individual concerts or $144 for a series subscription.

Thursday, Jan. 7 – features a Chamber version of Gustav Mahler’s Fourth Symphony

Wednesday, Feb. 3 – with soloist Luis Gomez, ACO Principal Bassist

Thursday, March 11 – with guest soloist Elmar Oliveira, Tchaikovsky Competition Gold Medalist

Thursday, March 25 – with guest piano soloist Tom Poster

Additionally, the Atlantic Classical Orchestra will present the ACO Chamber Concert Series at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, Sunday afternoons at 4 p.m.  Concert dates are Jan. 31, Feb. 21 and March 7.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." Recreational anglers who fish on Atlantic reefs must register with the state

The state of Florida announced this week a $3-million, mandatory reef fishing registration program. Beginning July 1, all recreational anglers who fish for 13 species of reef fish in Florida's Atlantic waters must register each year with the state – a measure aimed at learning how many fish are being harvested to help manage stocks better. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, meeting virtually on Thursday, voted unanimously to expand the Gulf Reef Fish Survey – launched in 2015 – to the entire state. VBHS orchestra places in top 3 in national competition

A local high school ensemble showcased their musicianship among nine other schools around the country in a national competition in New York City, and placed in the top three, school officials said. The Vero Beach High School Philharmonic Orchestra, composed of 38 members, placed second-runner up in "The Orchestra Cup," which was held March 9 under the 2019 National School Orchestra Championships.
