VERO BEACH — A 58-year-old woman is dead after officers found her body in a swimming pool at her home early Wednesday, police said.
Vero Beach police called the incident an “apparent accidental drowning” and said there is no evidence of foul play at this time. The woman was identified by officers as Vickie Cooper.
“The family is shocked and taking her death pretty hard,” Lt. John Pedersen, with the Vero Beach Police Department, said Wednesday.
Officers conducted a welfare check about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday at Cooper’s home in the 1300 block of Poitras Drive. Cooper’s daughter, who lives out of state, was trying to contact her mother over the last several days, Pedersen said.
Upon arrival, officers checked the perimeter of the home and found Cooper’s body in the pool. Pedersen said an autopsy will be performed on Cooper’s body either Thursday or Friday.
The Medical Examiner’s office should release autopsy results in about four to six weeks. Pedersen said several dogs that were found in Cooper’s home will be taken to the Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County, where a family member will pick them up.
