Expansions at Zon Beachside Assisted Living and Memory Care in Indian Harbour Beach will require the closing of longtime neighborhood restaurant Doubles Beachside.
The two-story, nearly-30,000-square-foot expansion will be added to look like part of the original design from 2015 and will convert the L-shaped building into a square. It will be built right on the former footprint of Doubles at 1896 South Patrick Dr., in the heart of the Indian Harbour Beach commercial district. The last day for the restaurant, established in 1983, is June 28.
Doubles owner Ray Featherhoff said there are plans to relocate the business at a location within Indian Harbour Beach or Satellite Beach, but no location has been selected out of several in consideration.
“We had planned to be further along toward a new location. Everything is up in the air right now,’’ he said.
The expansion of Zon Beachside Assisted Living and Memory Care will add 31 apartment-style units, a chapel, theater and a multi-purpose ballroom and senior resource center that is open to the public. Other aspects of the expansion design include a glass-walled conservatory for residents to be able to look out to an internal garden regardless of the weather. The facility, which has a waiting list, could serve as a model for its efforts toward reinventing the assisted living experience, said Executive Director Greg Kennedy.
Originally licensed for 100 beds when it opened in July 2016, features include restaurant-style dining, a pub with a daily happy hour, a reading library, salon and spa services, routine housekeeping services, and health and wellness center; also, the facility is pet-friendly.
The Indian Harbour Beach City Council has approved the expansion (15,000 square feet on the first floor and 14,560 square feet on second floor) to add the housing units and offices with room for the accessory uses.
