New Legislative Requirements for Initiative Petitions

Indian River County, FL – During the 2025 Legislative Session, the Florida Legislature passed and the Governor signed into law House Bill 1205, which strengthens the rules surrounding the citizen initiative petition process.

Beginning October 1, 2025, Supervisors of Elections across Florida are now required to notify voters when their signature on an initiative petition form has been verified as valid.  Under this new law, voters will be provided the opportunity to dispute a verified signature if they believe they did not sign the initiative petition form in question.

Any registered voter in Indian River County who has signed an initiative petition form dated May, 2025, or later, and whose identifying information and signature has been verified by the Supervisor of Elections Office, will receive a blue notification form by mail.  This form provides instructions for voters to dispute the validity of the signature if they believe it was submitted in error or without their authorization.  Voters with questions about the notification or the process to dispute their signature should contract the Indian River County Supervisor of Elections Office at 772-226-4700.

“This new notification form ensures voters are fully informed about the use of their signature,” said Leslie Rossway Swan, Indian River County Supervisor of Elections.  Each blue notification form will indicate the petition title and serial number.  The voter will receive a notification for each proposed constitutional amendment petition form that has been deemed valid by the Elections Office.
