VERO LAKE ESTATES — A family of six, including four children, were displaced after a small blaze left smoke damage throughout their home overnight, fire rescue crews said. The residence also had water damage from a water heater that caught fire during the incident, said Richard Marini, Assistant Fire Chief with Indian River County Fire Rescue.

No injuries were reported, according to Marini. “The home is temporarily uninhabitable,” Marini said.

The fire began about midnight at the single-family residence located on 102nd Court in Vero Lake Estates. Marini said the flames originated and were contained to a closet located in the master bedroom.

The water heater in the closet also caught on fire. Firefighters extinguished the flames within a couple of minutes, Marini said.

The American Red Cross was providing the family with financial assistance, along with health and mental health services.
