INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — In an effort to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries from crashes, county officials will host two workshops on Thursday aimed at improving the safety of local streets. The events are designed to gather input from residents to identify major roadway safety concerns and recommend projects, along with strategies, to create a safety action plan.

The open house workshops will be held:

Thursday, Feb. 13 from 9:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the Gifford Youth Achievement Center, 4875 43rd Ave., Vero Beach (Gifford), Florida, 32967

Thursday, Feb. 13 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Vero Beach Community Center, 2266 14th Ave., Vero Beach, 32960

The Indian River County Metropolitan Planning Organization will host the public workshops under Target Zero, a statewide initiative created in 2021 to decrease traffic-related deaths and serious injuries to zero.

The workshops will help county officials create a “Safe Streets for All Comprehensive Safety Action Plan,” which will be a joint effort with public engagement from county residents and visitors.

Indian River County received a grant to create the safety action plan. Projects that form in the safety action plan will be eligible for grant funding provided through the federal government’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

County officials said on average, eight people are killed and 49 are seriously injured on Florida’s roads every day.

“The design of the state’s current transportation system and driver behavior are contributing factors to these deaths and serious injuries,” county officials said in a statement.
