Celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week (October 8-13) at the nation’s oldest wildlife refuge. Staff and volunteers at Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge will host Meet & Greets on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (October 11-13) from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. along Centennial Trail. The Meet & Greets provide an opportunity to learn about the history of Pelican Island, founded in 1903 by President Theodore Roosevelt, and the many birds and wildlife found at the refuge. The focus of this year’s celebration is the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act, the landmark legislation that protects endangered and threatened species and the ecosystems they depend on. Free tram rides to Joe Michael Overlook will be available during these times. For more information, please call (772) 581-5557.
