Michael Rand “Randy” Phillips, 81, New Smyrna Beach
September 5, 1940 – November 30, 2021
Michael Rand “Randy” Phillips, 81, died November 30, 2021 at Ocean View Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in New Smyrna Beach.
Randy was born in Vero Beach on September 5, 1940, the only child of Grady and Mary Phillips. He lived in Vero until October 2019, when he moved to The Broadmoor in Ft. Pierce, FL, then to Ocean View Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in February 2021.
Randy is survived by his daughters Elizabeth “Beth” Kasler (John) of Canton, OH, Rebekah “Becky” Love (Billy) of New Smyrna Beach, FL, grandchildren Kasey Morley, Tristan (Gabrielle) Morley, Ashley Love, Grady Love, and great granddaughter Evelyn Grace Morley, born 12/1/2021. He was preceded in death by his parents Grady and Mary Phillips, and grandson Ian Love.
Randy was a 1958 graduate of Vero Beach High School where he played both football and baseball. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Florida Southern College in Lakeland in 1963, where he was a beloved member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and made many lifelong friends.
Randy worked for his father and uncle at Phillips Accounting before working for Tax Collector Gene Morris. He was a stringer, then Sports Editor of the Vero Beach Press Journal. Known as “Boomer,” Randy was the Official Scorekeeper for the Gulf Coast Dodgers, the Vero Beach Dodgers, and later, the Vero Beach Devil Rays. He also served as a statistician and member of the Vero Beach High School Fighting Indians football and basketball radio broadcast teams on WTTB, and then Christian FM, with fans who were often upset if his report was cut short or skipped during halftime. His job before retirement was Accounts Receivable for Dodger Pines Country Club & Restaurant and Dodgertown Golf Club.
Randy was a dedicated and life-long member of First Baptist Church of Vero Beach. He truly delighted in all aspects of service to his church, serving in many positions, including helping to count the offering, serving as deacon, running the sound for services, and VBS Crossing Guard.
Randy was both a player and a coach in the Vero Beach Recreation Department’s Colt and Pony League baseball programs, leading several teams to local and state level championships. He loved to bowl and did so weekly for many years as part of several teams. He earned a lifetime subscription to Sports Illustrated for being one of the original subscribers.
Randy was an active member and served as president with both the Vero Beach Jaycees and the Lions Club. The Jaycees named him a Jaycee International Senator, an honor that only six other club members had been awarded at the time. He was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship by the Lions Club for his service to humanitarian causes. He thoroughly enjoyed serving both organizations in numerous ways, especially helping the Lions Club with local elementary school eye screenings.
Those who knew him well, knew Randy was fiercely loyal to his commitments, and he enjoyed making others laugh. He loved Fighting Indians sports, the Dolphins, the Dodgers, and never missed a chance to travel to Lakeland for annual Lambda Chi Alpha reunions with his brothers or to support Florida Southern.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2021, from 10-11 AM at First Baptist Church, Vero Beach.
A Memorial Service will begin at 11 AM in the Sanctuary with a reception following a brief gathering at Crestlawn Cemetery.
