INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A second anchor store at Indian River Mall will soon close its doors after serving customers for 24 years.
Retail giant Macy’s announced Tuesday it will close three Florida store locations, including one at Indian River Mall in Vero Beach. The other Macy’s stores that will close are in Pompano Beach and Sanford, Macy’s Media Relations Manager Julianne Olivo said.
Official closing dates were not available, as it would depend on clearance sales.
“The decision to close a store is always a difficult one, but Macy’s is proud to have served the Vero Beach community over the past 24 years, the Pompano community over the past 50 years and the Sanford community over the past 25 years,” Olivo said in a statement. “We encourage customers to shop with us at nearby Macy’s stores, including Macy’s Melbourne Square and Macy’s Treasure Coast Square, as well as online at macys.com.”
Olivo said regular, non-seasonal colleagues who were unable to be placed at nearby Macy’s stores will be eligible for severance, including outplacement resources. Macy’s has more than 740 locations nationwide.
The store chain is the second major anchor business to close at the mall in recent months. Last year, Sears announced it would close more than 20 stores nationwide, including the location at Indian River Mall.
The mall continues to struggle, with the facility having more store closings than openings. The mall is now more than 25 percent empty.
Last June, 24 storefronts at the mall were empty. The mall still has some anchor stores – for now – including Dillard’s and JCPenny.
