The Tunnel to Towers 5K Walk/Run begins at 7:15 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at Riverside Park in Vero Beach, honoring those who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks while raising money for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The annual Vero Beach event, now in its 13th year, follows a 5K, or 3.1-mile, course open to runners, walkers and families. The foundation supports fallen and catastrophically injured first responders and military service members and their families. The national Run & Walk Series honors New York City firefighter Stephen Siller, who died after running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel in firefighting gear toward the World Trade Center on Sept. 1. Packet pickup will be from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at Fire Station 2, 3301 Bridge Plaza Dr., Vero Beach. Registration opens at 6:15 a.m. the day of the event, although online registration will remain available until the start. Participants must display their bibs on their outermost garments. Water stations and parking are available. Strollers and wheelchairs are allowed. Adults are $45; first responders and military personnel are $35; youths ages 13-17 are $25; and children 12 and younger are $15. Prices increase after Friday, Sept. 4. A Rare & Exotic Orchid Exhibition & Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, with an 8 a.m. member preview, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, at McKee Botanical Garden in Vero Beach. McKee Botanical Garden will present the event in partnership with the Vero Beach Orchid Society.
