INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – JULY 22, 2026 – For 10 consecutive years, WM has helped local students kick off the school year with confidence through its annual backpack donation to the Gifford Youth Achievement Center (GYAC). This year, 180 backpacks filled with essential school supplies were distributed to campers, continuing a decade-long tradition of supporting education and investing in the future of the community.
Adding to the excitement, campers had the opportunity to meet CARTer, the official recycling mascot for Indian River County. CARTer is the namesake and face of the county’s CARTer’s Corner app, a resource that helps residents identify recyclable materials. Through fun interactions with campers, CARTer helped promote the importance of recycling.

The backpacks were distributed to children participating in the GYAC Summer Camp, a program that combines academic enrichment with recreational activities. Designed to keep students engaged throughout the summer, the program helps participants maintain learning momentum while enjoying a fun and rewarding camp experience.
Over the past 10 years, WM’s backpack donation program has helped hundreds of local students prepare for the school year, reflecting the company’s ongoing commitment to education and community engagement.
