VERO BEACH — A 31-year-old prison inmate who escaped from a work release program in Volusia County and didn’t return, was found hiding at his girlfriend’s Vero beachside apartment Monday, deputies said. Sheriff’s officials released body camera footage Wednesday capturing the arrest of Jalyn Binion, who they said tried to climb out the rear second-story window.

“(Binion’s) girlfriend picked him up from the Department of Corrections facility and drove him back to (her apartment) in Vero Beach,” said Lt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson for the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

Binion was charged with attempted escape, court records show. He was held Wednesday at the Indian River County Jail without bond. Deputies said Binion’s girlfriend was initially taken into custody for harboring or aiding an escaped prisoner, but later released.

“(The girlfriend) ended up cooperating and confirmed he was in the apartment,” Jaworski said.

Deputies became aware about 10 a.m. Monday that a wanted person – Binion – escaped the day prior from the Department of Corrections in Volusia County. Sheriff’s officials learned Binion was last seen with his girlfriend who had picked him up in her silver GMC sports utility vehicle from the correctional facility.

Deputies and U.S. Marshals went to the girlfriend’s apartment located on Azalea Lane on the barrier island in Vero Beach. Law enforcement officials in tactical gear knocked and gave commands for Binion to exit the second-story apartment.

“Binion opened a rear window, kicked the screen out, and started an attempt to climb out the window from the second story,” reports show. “Binion was challenged and a canine warning was given.”

Deputies said Binion went back into the apartment while deputies tried to breach the front door. After an unsuccessful attempt to break open the door, officers then shattered a sliding glass door, the body camera video shows.

Binion then exited the front door and was detained. Deputies booked Binion into the Indian River County Jail.

Binion was expected to be transferred to the Volusia County Jail.

Binion’s most recent prison stints at the Department of Corrections came from charges including several counts of grand theft. He entered the facility last November and was set to be released this November, records show.

Details on Binion’s arraignment were not immediately available.
