INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Dozens of environmental enthusiasts put on gloves and grabbed trash pickers to remove discarded water bottles, caps, cups, bags and other debris left on Golden Sands Beach Park. The event was part of a nationwide initiative to remove litter from shorelines ahead of World Ocean Day.
The beach cleanup was held 9 a.m. Saturday, June 6 at Golden Sands Beach Park, 10350 Highway A1A, north of Wabasso Beach Park. Coastal Connections Inc., a Vero Beach nonprofit dedicated to protecting sea turtles and their habitats, and Beach.com, a digital platform showcasing the world’s best coastal stays, hosted the second-annual event.
World Ocean Day, recognized Monday, June 8, focuses on a mission to protect 30 percent of lands, waters and oceans by 2030. The theme for this year’s World Ocean Day is Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet.
