Castaway Cove resident Dr. Christopher Olenek was convicted Friday (April 24) on one misdemeanor battery count and sentenced by County Judge Nicole Menz to 364 days in the Indian River County Jail.

Jurors returned the verdict in two hours, 13 minutes at 6:39 p.m. after an all-day trial stemming from Olenek’s Nov. 13 arrest for improperly touching a female job applicant shadowing him in July at East Side Urgent Care on 37th Place in Vero Beach.

Hoping to establish a felony course of conduct case, Sheriff Eric Flowers called victims to come forward. Eight complaints between 2011 and 2022 are too old to prosecute. Despite Flowers saying 20 potential victims came forward, no felonies materialized.

Olenek, 63, who moved to Florida in 2009 after training at Mount Sinai Medical Center and Columbia University’s Presbyterian Hospital, was described by Flowers as a “creep.”

The fate of Olenek’s medical license to practice as an osteopathic physician is unclear. Edward Mosher defended Olenek, with Assistant State Attorney Gayle Braun prosecuting.
