What and Where: One of the first places newcomers visit in Vero is often Waldo’s, the bar and restaurant in the historic Driftwood Resort in Central Beach. More tourists than locals dine there, and the restaurant has its ups and downs. But the seafood is fresh, and the fried food, wings and quesadillas are generally pretty good.
Ambiance/Atmosphere: Vintage Waldo Sexton unadorned.
Must-Try Dishes: The key lime pie is a winner.
Adult Beverages: Full bar. Limited selection of wines.
Reservations: Walk-ins only.
Price: $$
Rating: Two stars
Overall Verdict: A restaurant that styles itself “The last of the Great American Hangouts” seems unlikely to ever win a Michelin star, and Waldo’s is about as casual as casual dining can get. But on a recent visit, Waldo’s offered not one, not two, but three seafood offerings as catch of the day – snapper, grouper and dolphin. We had blackened grouper, and the fish was fresh and the preparation fine. But looking at other tables as we were leaving, we were wishing we had ordered fish and chips.
