INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Deputies are asking residents to help search for a missing 86-year-old Vero Lake Estates man who suffers from dementia and Parkinson’s disease. The man – identified as Donald Keaton – was last seen Sunday afternoon walking away from the Encore Sunshine Travel campground near Interstate 95.
“Donald may be confused, disoriented, or seeking shelter in wooded areas, sheds, porches or nearby properties,” Indian River County sheriff’s officials said in a statement.
Keaton was last seen wearing:
- Long dark pants
- Long-sleeve shirt
- Dress shoes
- Retired military ball cap
- Possibly layered clothing including a patterned polo and dress shorts
Deputies asked community members to check their property – yards, sheds, carports, porches, boats and RVs, around fences or tree lines and any wooded areas near homes. Sheriff’s officials also asked neighbors to review their home security cameras and look for anyone walking past between 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16 and Wednesday, Nov. 19.

“Even a small sighting helps,” sheriff’s officials said. “People with dementia often respond to their name even when disoriented. Please call out ‘Donald.’ If he’s nearby and unable to speak loudly, he may still respond.”
Keaton’s disappearance prompted the response of several agencies including the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Keaton was last seen walking away from the Encore RV Park, 9455 108th Avenue, Lot 231, east of Interstate 95 and south of County Road 512, sheriff’s officials said. The park is less than half-a-mile from Keaton’s residence.
Sheriff’s officials issued a social media alert Monday and an updated alert Tuesday about Keaton’s disappearance. Sheriff Eric Flowers said deputies inspected surveillance footage that showed Keaton walking away from the RV park.
The sheriff’s office has bloodhound teams, drones, helicopters and ATVs searching for Keaton.
Keaton was described as a white man with glasses, a bald head and blue eyes. Keaton is 5-feet 9-inches tall and weighs 150 pounds, sheriff’s officials said.
Anyone who knows of Keaton’s whereabouts should call 911.
“Do not delay. Even small pieces of information help narrow the search,” sheriff’s officials said. “Let’s come together and bring Donald home safely.”
