Cold weather shelters open Monday night

VERO BEACH — A cold snap with a wind chill projected to be as low as 30 degrees led officials to open two cold weather shelters Monday evening. The chilly weather comes as Florida prepares to enter the winter season.

“The cold weather won’t last long,” said Scott Kelly, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Melbourne.

Monday night will be the coldest this week, with temperatures in the low 40s on the mainland and mid-40s on the barrier island, Kelly said. Areas west of Interstate 95 could drop to the upper 30s.

Tuesday was expected to be in the mid-50s during the day. The temperature will range from the upper 40s to mid-50s Tuesday night, Kelly said.

The Source, a local Christian ministry, will have 36 beds available from 9 p.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Tuesday, according to Indian River County Emergency Services. Registration began at 2 p.m. and will be on a first-come first- serve basis.

Those wanting to take shelter at The Source should arrive by 9 p.m., officials said. Light meals will be provided.

The Source is located at 1015 Commerce Avenue in Vero Beach. For more information, call 772-564-0202.

The Salvation Army will have beds for up to 40 people. The charity organization will be in operation from 7 p.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Registration is at the site and on a first-come first-serve basis. Light meals will be provided.

The Salvation Army is located at 2655 5th Street Southwest in Vero Beach. For more information, call 772-978-0265 or 772-453-5383.

Anyone planning on using space heaters should keep them away from flammable materials such as pillows and curtains, Kelly said. It’s best to plug the space heater directly into the wall outlet instead of an extension cord.

“Every winter there’s a fire caused by a space heater,” Kelly said.
