VERO BEACH — Heavy, sporadic downpours caused flooding on several roadways in low lying areas on Friday. Motorists should use caution and not attempt to drive down any flooded streets, meteorologists warned.
“Turn around, don’t drown. It will take time for the water to drain (after days and days of rainfall),” said Robert Haley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Melbourne. “You don’t want to get trapped in your vehicle. That’s how people die in these flood waters. There’s no way to tell what’s underneath.”
Vero Beach South received up to 5 inches of rainfall overnight, Haley said. Vero Beach had 1-to-3 inches of rainfall.
Some areas that were flooded on Friday morning were 35th Avenue north of 8th Street, north of 4th Street along 43rd Avenue and roadways in the Glendale Lakes neighborhood.
A flood watch for Vero Beach remains in effect until 8 p.m. on Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne. A coastal flood advisory remains in effect until 4 a.m. Monday.
Friday afternoon was expected to have a 60 percent chance of showers, meteorologists said. The night will be mostly cloudy with a low temperature near 71 degrees.
East northeast winds will be between 5-to-10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
