WABASSO — A man is behind bars after he carried a gun into Wabasso Foods store last week and ordered the patrons and employees to get out. A woman working at the store – who also had a firearm – pushed the man out of the building, fired two warning shots in the air and wrestled the gun away from him, reports show.

The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office recently released surveillance and body camera footage of the incident. The surveillance video shows the store employee tussling with the man before taking his firearm.

“(The woman) successfully removed Calvert Allen’s firearm from him and provided it to deputies after they took Calvert Allen into custody,” a deputy said in the arrest report.

The body camera footage shows a deputy arresting the man.

Calvert Tyrone Allen, 62, of the 8500 block of 64th Court, was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon and improper exhibition of a firearm or dangerous weapon. Allen was held Thursday at the Indian River County Jail on a $66,000 bond.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a disturbance on Oct. 3 at Wabasso Foods located in the 6300 block of 85th Street, east of 66th Avenue. Deputies spoke to a witness, who said she was sitting with her friend outside the store when Allen rode past on his tricycle and threatened her.

Minutes later, Allen returned to Wabasso Foods with the gun, walked inside and demanded everyone to exit multiple times. One of the women outside hid behind a dumpster and dialed 911, reports show.

A patron told deputies Allen did not point the firearm at anyone inside the business. The employee, who described Allen as a frequent customer, said she grabbed her own black handgun out of her purse and pushed Allen outside of the store.

Allen continued to hold onto his gun while the worker tried to snatch it away from him. The employee struck Allen with her gun in order to get his firearm, reports show.

Deputies arrested Allen and booked him into the county jail. Allen has an arraignment at 8:45 a.m. Nov. 20, court records show.
