Coming Up! Moonshot Series highlights boost in local literacy

The Learning Alliance and the School District of Indian River County will present the next installment of the Moonshot Series beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Riverside Theatre, 3250 Riverside Park Dr., Vero Beach. This documentary showcases the district’s efforts in partnership with the Learning Alliance and the Moonshot Community Action Network to create brighter futures for children through literacy. VNA Family Fun Day is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Our Savior Lutheran Church. 1850 Sixth Ave., Vero Beach. Women’s Health Symposium begins 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Women’s Club of Vero Beach, 1534 21st St. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Melissa Dean, who will lead a presentation on hormone health. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a nutrition health scan, receive personalized consultations, meet with medical experts, and enjoy refreshments. The cost is $20. The Running of the Wieners takes place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Pareidolia Brewing Company, 712 Cleveland St., Sebastian. This quirky race features dachshunds and will benefit H.A.L.O. No-Kill Rescue Shelter. There will also be live music, a food truck, prizes, and a festive atmosphere. Motown & Mingle begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Summer Crush Vineyard and Winery, 4200 Johnston Road, Fort Pierce. The event celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Economic Opportunities Council of Indian River County. The Best of the Best Annual Juried Exhibition begins with an opening reception at 6 p.m. Oct. 4 and runs through Nov. 14 at the A.E. Backus Museum, 500 North Indian River Dr., Fort Pierce. This exhibition features the work of both amateur and professional artists from across the region. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays, and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. Vero Beach Museum of Art begins its fall 2025 term of classes begins on Monday, Oct. 6. The sessions run to Dec. 12. The offerings include 10-week and five-week courses with a second round of shorter courses starting Nov. 11. From drawing and painting to photography, mixed media, art history and contemplative arts, students of all levels can find something to suit their interests. Classes range from $85 to $335, with members discounts available.
