VERO BEACH — Investigators and medical examiners were working to identify a man’s remains found in an advanced stage of decomposition, police said. Sheriff’s deputies discovered the body Wednesday in a wooded area near Old Dixie Highway and turned the case over to Vero Beach police, reports show.
Officers responded to reports of a deceased person about 3:15 p.m. in the 1300 block of Old Dixie Highway, west of the railroad tracks, in Vero Beach, said Officer Kelsea Callahan, spokesperson for the Vero Beach Police Department. Investigators arrived and located the body, which was taken to the medical examiner’s office.
Authorities will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. It was unclear if any foul play was involved.
Police were combing the area for any nearby surveillance footage.
“This remains an active investigation and will be updated as information becomes available,” police said in a statement.
