The Scholarship Foundation of Indian River County celebrated nearly six decades of support for local students at its 59th annual awards ceremony at the Waxlax Center at Saint Edward’s School.

Since its inception in 1965, the foundation has significantly impacted the lives of 3,141 deserving students pursuing higher education, awarding them $15.5 million in need-based college scholarships.

The event brought together past recipients, scholarship grantors, community members and current scholars, highlighting the transformative power of education and the vital role that financial assistance plays in making college dreams a reality for students who might otherwise struggle to afford it.

The scholarships are awarded based on financial need, academic achievement and community involvement.

“Thank you, everyone, for coming tonight to celebrate these wonderful and accomplished young adults. Everyone here is a culmination of big and small decisions that we’ve made every day, every week, every year of our lives. You students are sitting here tonight because of the decisions you made over the last four years,” said Jonathan Sternberg, SFIRC board president, before encouraging them to continue striving for excellence.

Guest speaker Alexus Woods, a 2018 scholarship alumna, graduated from Sebastian River High School in 2018 scholarship alumna, and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Stetson University.

“As I stand before you, I am reminded of the profound impact that education and community support can have on shaping the trajectory of one’s life. My journey through college was not just about earning a degree. It was a transformative experience enriched by my community engagement work,” said Woods.

“I discovered the power of impact, service, community, and how the smallest acts also make a huge difference. In serving others, I found a sense of purpose and fulfillment that transcended the boundaries of the classroom.”

Knowing the scholarships would enable her to graduate debt free, she said, allowed her to “focus on my studies, immerse myself in my learning, and explore my passions without the constant worry of having to pay for tuition, books, or living expenses.”

Offering words of advice and encouragement, she said the paths ahead of them are filled with opportunities and possibilities.

“Enrich your journey with an open mind and a willing heart, and never underestimate the power of your potential,” said Woods.

This year, the foundation awarded a total of $749,750 through 91 scholarships to 39 students, including four recipients currently in college and eight dual-enrolled high school seniors. The scholarship recipients will attend 20 colleges and universities in five states and Washington, D.C.
