Symphony Sets Sail with ‘Pirates of Penzance‘
Space Coast Symphony presents Gilbert & Sullivan classic with professional cast
(VERO BEACH, FL) August 5, 2024 – A ship flying the Jolly Roger has been spotted on the horizon, headed for Florida’s east coast! The band of brigands will break out in song when the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra presents, The Pirates of Penzance Sunday, August 18 at 3:00 PM, at Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center, 1707 16th Street in Vero Beach, 32960. Performed by a professional cast from Central Florida Vocal Arts, Gilbert and Sullivan’s zany operetta will be fully staged, with costumes and sets. At the center of the story is Frederic, apprenticed to a band of tender-hearted pirates and devoted to his true love, Mabel. The production’s farcical plot is advanced by the musical numbers, including the hilarious and much-parodied “Major-General’s Song.” Written in English and clocking in at under two hours, The Pirates of Penzance remains one of Gilbert & Sullivan’s most popular comic operas, 145 years after its New York City premiere. The 1981 Broadway production ran for 787 performances and won both the Tony Award for Best Revival and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. A film version was released in 1983, starring Kevin Kline and Linda Ronstadt. $35 tickets for The Pirates of Penzance are available through the orchestra website at www.SpaceCoastSymphony.org or at Marine Bank & Trust, beachside and mainland branches. Tickets at the door are $40. Concertgoers aged 18 and under or with a college ID are admitted free to every SCSO concert. The Pirates of Penzance is fresh off three, fully-staged performances in Orlando. Space Coast Symphony Orchestra Conductor and Artistic Director, Aaron T. Collins enjoys the annual summer collaborations with Central Florida Vocal Arts and knows this production is a winner.
“Pirates is such a lighthearted show,” said Collins. “The story is fast-paced and silly — and of course has a happy ending. There’s a shipload of raucous fun in store for the audience, whether they are newcomers to operetta or Gilbert and Sullivan aficionados.”
The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra is one of only a handful of U.S. orchestras to perform year-round. Concertgoers aged 18 and under or with a college ID are admitted free to every SCSO concert.
