SCOTTISH SOCIETY OF THE TREASURE COAST “KIRKIN OF THE TARTAN” CEREMONY

The public are invited to a very special ceremony taking place at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2555 58th Avenue, Vero Beach on Sunday, April 14 at 10:30 a.m.  It is called “The Kirkin of the Tartans” and has been a tradition for Scottish/American people throughout the United States since 1941.

Each year, Westminster Presbyterian Church celebrates their Scottish Presbyterian heritage with a Kirkin’ O’ The Tartans service.   Members of the Scottish Society, wearing their family clan tartans, will form a procession carrying flags and Scottish banners and file into the church behind a bag pipe player.  The flags are then placed before the ceremonial alter rail, at which point the Reverend Brad will speak about the Scottish heritage and bless each tartan brought before the alter.

In churches, and even at Scottish Highland Games, the Kirkin’ is celebrated by Scots – and those who would be Scots – accompanied by prayer, scripture, preaching, blessing, bagpipe, and, of course, the singing of Amazing Grace.   Refreshments will be served after the service.
