INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — County and state firefighters worked to knock down a brush fire that caused heavy smoke and the closure of 27th Avenue Southwest on Sunday morning. No injuries were reported from the blaze, said Sgt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
“The lane closures are expected to last for several hours,” sheriff’s officials said. “Please be patient and use alternate routes to avoid traffic delays.”
Indian River County Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service were attempting to contain the blaze. The flames, which scorched 10-to-12 acres, were 90 percent contained Sunday afternoon, said Richard Marini, Assistant Chief with the Indian River County Fire Rescue.
Deputies and firefighters responded to reports of the brush fire in a wooded area about 10:46 a.m., Jaworski said. Marini said fire rescue crews had three brush trucks, one tanker trunk and three fire engines on scene.
Deputies closed 27th Avenue Southwest from 5th Street Southwest to Oslo Road. Jaworski said motorists can take 20th Avenue Southwest or 43rd Avenue Southwest as detours.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known. There were no endangered structures near the blaze, Marini said.
