Sylvester “Leroy” Russ, 84, Indian River County

July 4, 1939 – February 28, 2024

Sylvester “Leroy” Russ passed away on February 28, 2024, at the age of 84. He was born to Eula Mae and Rufus Russ on July 4, 1939, and was a lifelong resident of Indian River County. Leroy, as he preferred to be called, owned and operated RUSS LAWN SERVICE for over 50 years. He was a longtime beloved member of Bibleway Church of God In Christ (COGIC) where he loved his church family and faithfully served as a Deacon. Leroy was an avid fisherman, music enthusiast and NASCAR racing fan. He was especially known for his travels in his Allegro Motorhome and hosting large family gatherings during the holidays and other special occasions. And most of all Leroy – never met a stranger!

Leroy had a voice like no other and from a young age he sang in church. His Gift was his rich, vibrant and powerful voice that he used to touch, comfort and inspire souls. Leroy was the lead singer of the famed southern gospel group, The Florida QC’s for almost 20 years. The group was always in high demand and received frequent invitations to perform throughout the South and around the country. Known for their showmanship, The Florida QC’s were faithful ambassadors of Christ and spread the gospel wherever they went to standing ovations.

Everyone who knew Leroy knew that after God, most of all – how dearly he loved his family and cherished his friends. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 59 years, Ollie Rose Russ; son Steve Russ (Melissa) of Vero Beach, FL., Daughters Valerie Eutsey of West Palm Beach, FL., LeaShea and Sabrina Russ of Vero Beach, FL., Toni Green (Darell) of Madison, FL., Joy Russ-Murray (Hans) of Fort Lauderdale, FL., and Odori Hernandez (Efren) of Vero Beach, FL. He is also survived by one brother, Rufus Russ of Hyannis, MA and sisters Lucille Russ Buckner and Clara Trawick Jackson of Vero Beach, FL. Deacon Russ is also survived by a loving large blended family of (22) grandchildren, (21) great grandchildren and (15) great great grandchildren.
