FELLSMERE — A man was seriously wounded after being shot multiple times Tuesday afternoon, police said. Police said there is no danger to the public.

“The investigation is in progress as officers and sheriff’s deputies continue to work active leads to arrest the suspect or suspects,” Fellsmere Police Chief Keith Touchberry said in a statement. “More information will be released as soon as possible.”

This is the second shooting to happen within two days in Indian River County. The two shootings were not connected, said Sgt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

The motive behind Tuesday’s incident was not immediately available.

Fellsmere police and Indian River County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of gunfire about 2:43 p.m. in the 1000 block of Lincoln Street, east of Willow Street and south of State Street. The shooting occurred down the street from Bethel AME Church.

Police found the man with gunshot wounds. The man was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, officers said.

“While the scene is secure and no residents are in danger, the 1000 block of Lincoln Street to the corner of Grant Avenue is an active crime scene and travelers in the area will have to divert to State Street,” police said in a statement.

It was unclear if officers had identified a suspect late Tuesday.

Further details on the gunfire were not available because of the active investigation. Those who have information about the shooting should contact Fellsmere police at 772-571-1360.
