The property was built in 1909 by Swedish immigrant Axel Hallstrom, who had a pineapple plantation on this farmstead. In 1999, his daughter Miss Ruth Hallstrom bequeathed this property to the Indian River County Historical Society. The Society took possession of the  property and buildings including their contents in July 2000.  The property is a living museum that documents and demonstrates a bygone way of life in Indian River County. The collections include artifacts, photographs, paper documents, furniture and memorabilia. In June 2002, the Hallstrom House & Farmstead was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

For over thirty years, the Indian River County Historical Society has contributed to preserving the historical and environmental resources of Indian River County, the Indian River Lagoon area, and the State of Florida. The Historical Society is a non-profit organization.
