The Genies are the Vero Beach Theatre Guild’s annual award ceremony where we honor and celebrate one another at the close of another fantastic season. On June 3, 2023, at 6:30 pm, we start off with a social hour of refreshments, and a chance to catch up with your theatre family. At 7:30 pm, we move into the mainstage auditorium where things start to get interesting…
For those of you who have joined us at past ceremonies, things have changed! The Genies have entered a new chapter!
What Does This Mean?
The most noticeable change in the event this season is that is it FREE! We have also revamped the Genie Awards from top to bottom. In the past the awards focused on our volunteers who appeared onstage. Now we have expanded the lineup to include ALL volunteers. In addition to the celebration and the awards there will be a chance of winning a prize through a raffle. We have also changed the process in determining the Genie Awards. In past a selective panel of Genie Judges would go to each show and give the actors and production a numerical score, but what those judges didn’t get to see was the hard work and effort that went on to get to that performance. Now the winners are selected by group vote within each individual production. Who better knows your performance journey than those who shared the stage alongside you? This revised process also eliminates competition between productions and promotes our values of collaboration.
What To Do Next?
We hope to see all of you at this celebration. If you are ready to join us for this festive occasion, all you need to do is RSVP on our website (just like if you were going to buy a ticket), or you can call the box office at 772-562-8300. While the event itself is free we do require a reservation to plan for food and to save your seat. Please note, you may want to bring some money with you for the cash bar, and any additional donations during the evening that will go towards future volunteer appreciation events. Everyone at VBTG knows that volunteering is hard work and that we all deserve time to relax and enjoy the friendships we have found at this wonderful place!
But What Do I Wear?
This is a formal event, think of it like the VBTG’s version of the TONY Awards. We encourage you to dress up, because when life doesn’t provide enough drama, sometimes you have to make your own! The theme, “A Whole New World”, is inspired by Aladdin and the mysterious tales of the Arabian Nights. Think jewel tones like sapphire, ruby, or emerald or precious metals like gold or silver. Be mindful that the Social Hour of this event will partly take place outdoors. If you do not want to dress up we only ask that you do not wear t-shirts or jeans. We are so looking forward to seeing your creative interpretations of this year’s theme for the VBTG Genie Awards!
