Man shot at home; flown to hospital

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 75-year-old man has non-life threatening injuries after being shot at his residence late Friday, authorities said. Sheriff’s spokesperson Lt. Joe Abollo said the shooting appeared to be a targeted incident.

“The man answered the door and was shot in the face,” Indian River County Assistant Fire Chief Sean Gibbons said.

Deputies were working to gather information on the suspected shooter who fled from the scene, officials said. Abollo said there was no known threat to the public.

“The suspect went to the home and left in a dark-colored SUV,” Abollo said. It was unclear if the suspect and the injured man knew each other.

The shooting happened about 6:20 p.m. Friday in front of the residence in the 1800 block of 10th Place, Abollo said. The suspect was outside when he or she fired shots toward the home, striking the man inside.

Sheriff’s officials initially said the man was shot several times, but later clarified he was shot once. The man was flown to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, where he was undergoing surgery, Abollo said.

“Detectives are speaking with neighbors and reviewing footage from doorbell cameras,” Abollo said.

Deputies continue to search for the shooter. The shooting remains under investigation.

No further information was immediately available.
