YSF sailors started the Fall 2022 Season with first place finishes in both the high school 420 and the elementary/middle school Opti class sailboats. The first Florida East Coast Series regatta was sailed on the Indian River Lagoon at the U.S. Sailing Center Martin County on Sunday, October 2. Conditions were ideal for dinghy sailing with a steady 10 knot breeze out of the north.
Skipper Ashton Evers (13) and crew Jimmy Collins took first place honors in the highly competitive 420 class. Evers and Collins won 3 of 6 races sailed during the five-hour competition. YSF’s Edee Steinkamp (15), skippering in her first regatta with crew Caspar Quam (15), took third place overall. The Steinkamp-Quam team finished first in race #3 beating teammates Evers and Collins by a boat length. Quite an accomplishment for a first-time skipper and crew.
In the Opti Class Gold Fleet Alex Delamarter (13) took over-all line honors with Andrew Getzels (12) a close second. Nick LaRochelle (11) took first place in the Silver Fleet with Mia Lloyd (11) taking a third. YSF’s Racing Coach, Roberto Ayala commented that “Both Nick and Mia had a killer day.” Commenting on Nick’s tactics: “Nick’s accelerations off the line were able to propel him and punch-out in a couple of starts from the center of the line.” “Mia showed an ability to start on time, sail in clean air and keep her boat moving!”
Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit with a mission of offering sailing instruction to the children of Indian River County.
