William Bernard Powers, 89, Vero Beach
August 14, 2022
William Bernard Powers, 89, passed away on August 14, 2022 at VNA Hospice in Vero Beach one day shy of his 90th birthday.
Known by his family and friends as the Prince of Vero, Bill was born in Chicago to the late William and Hazel Powers. Bill worked in transportation at Natural Gas Pipelines for 37 years before retiring. Although he had sworn never to marry, he met Martha Wolfram at a bridge game and for Bill it was a Grand Slam. They married six months later and, to his surprise, the marriage lasted more than 50 years.
Bill loved being outdoors and together they went trout fishing, grouse and deer hunting, much to the amusement of the animal population. Bill’s patience in teaching the city girl paid off and he was thrilled when she learned these sports. When Bill and Martha moved from Chicago to Vero Beach, they took up golf and continued playing bridge and working jigsaw puzzles together.
Although not much of a talker, Bill loved being with family and friends. He was an incredibly kind person with a delightful sense of humor. He loved his children and was incredibly proud of them. He leaves his memories to be cherished by his wife, Martha Powers (nee Wolfram); daughter, Jean Powers; son, Matthew Powers (Margaret Szczepaniak); sister, Kathryn Hills (Patrick Butler); sister-in-law, Lynn Wolfram; brothers-in-law, David Wolfram (Dianne Lui) and Paul Wolfram (Elizabeth Kinney) as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to VNA & Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
