Robert L. Esposito, 77, Vero Beach

May 14, 1945 – August 09, 2022

Robert L. Esposito, age 77, passed away August 9, 2022 at the VNA Hospice House, Vero Beach.

He was born May 14, 1945 in New Haven, Connecticut to the late Adolph and Bruna Esposito.

Bob was a graduate of West Haven High School, class of 1963. He served in the United States Navy, serving on the USS New DD818.

He was a parishioner of St. Helen Catholic Church, Vero Beach and a past office of the Knights of Columbus Council 5629. He was also past president of the Orange Hills Men’s Golf Association.

He enjoyed his 37 years of work, with the United Illuminating Company, New Haven, Connecticut. During retirement, he worked at the Yale University Golf Course for 13 years, prior to moving to Vero Beach, Florida. His love of golf continued after his move to Florida in 2015. He worked part time at both Bent Pine Golf Course and Orchid Island Gold Course, in Vero Beach, FL.

Bob also dedicated over 35 years to the American Hockey League, as the Chief Off Ice Official with the New Haven Nighthawks, Senators, The Beast of New Haven, and The Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Lanny; sons, Chad (Chrissy) and Sugito (Gita); daughters, Dina (David) Floccari and Novia (John) Mozart; brothers, Anthony Esposito, Eugene (Barbara) Esposito, and Henry (Jan) Esposito; sisters, Elizabeth (David) Briggs, Mary (Frank) Yuliana; and grandchildren, Maurice, Philippe, Pasquale, Sebastian, Posey, Luca, and Mia.

His favorite times were watching Dina play youth hockey and field hockey in high school, watching Chad play youth hockey and high school hockey, and also enjoying his grandson playing high school soccer and tennis.

A Visitation for friends and family will be held 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 15, 2022 at Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, 1655 27th Street, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church, 7550 26th St, Vero Beach, FL 32966.

A Memorial Mass will be held 10:00 a.m., August 20 at Saint Anthony Church, 70 Washington Ave, New Haven, CT 06519. Interment, with military honors will take place in New Haven, Connecticut.

Edward Joseph Capasse, 91, Vero Beach

October 1, 1930 – August 4, 2022

Edward Joseph Capasse, 91, of Vero Beach, FL and Westport, CT passed away peacefully August 4, 2022 surrounded by his family. Born October 1, 1930 in Westport, CT, he was the son of the late Edward T. Capasse (former Westport Police Captain) and the late Theresa (Prunotto) Capasse.

Growing up in Westport, Edward attended Staples High School where he met his late wife of 48 years, Esther Ann (Mondella) Capasse, a graduate of Good Counsel College (1952) and a Westport schoolteacher. He later attended Fairfield University (1952) and Boston College Law School (1955) whereupon he embarked on a prominent law career in Westport for over 60 years, first with Tate, Capasse & Johnson and later Nevas, Nevas & Capasse. He was active civically serving on numerous community and elected boards including for the YMCA, Assumption Church and chairing the Board of Finance. An avid boater and sportsman, Ed enjoyed golf, swimming, tennis and was a member of Saugatuck Harbor Yacht Club and Patterson Club.

Beyond his career as “consigliere” to established Westport businessmen, he is most remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend living up to his Staples yearbook quote, “Upright as the cedar”. Deeply religious he espoused strong family values, integrity, work ethic and charity spiced with a witty sense of humor. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and gardening while pursuing a late “singing career”. He spent his final years with his late second wife, Linda (Coburn) Capasse with whom he shared a decade of happy memories.

Edward is survived by his four children, Thomas (Jeanne) of Westport, Mary Beth (Jim) Carroll of Falls Church, VA, David of Bridgeport, CT and Meg (Dan) MacLeod of South Portland, ME; 5 grandchildren, Jay (Becca), Erin and Addison Carroll and Natalie (Subhash) and Michael Capasse; one great-grandchild, Jarmin James Carroll and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to Esther and Linda, Ed is pre-deceased by his sister, Marie (Robert) Whealn.

Visiting hours will take place at Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road, Westport on August 15 between the hours of 4:00-7:00 PM with a Mass of Christian Burial at the Assumption Church, 98 Riverside Avenue, Westport at 11:00 AM, August 16 to be followed by burial at Assumption Cemetery.

Services are open to all. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Foundation for Fighting Blindness. Afflicted with a hereditary eye disease, Ed overcame occupational and professional disability with support from the Foundation for which he was an active participant in their mission.

Joseph Paul Burke, Sr., 94, Vero Beach 

September 9, 1927 – August 9, 2022

Joseph Paul Burke, Sr, age 94, died at home on August 9, 2022. The Blessed Lord willing, he has rejoined his wife Sally, who passed away in 2006.  Also predeceasing Joe were his daughter, MaryEllen Burke, and son, Michael Burke.

Joe was born in Paterson, N.J., the son of Joseph F. Burke and Marguerite Phalon Burke.  After graduation from high school, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Navy.  On his release at the end of World War II, he remained in the Navy Reserves and was called back to active duty during the Korean War, serving aboard the USS John Hood (DD655).  Later, he was commissioned as an intelligence officer in the Navy Reserve and performed a number of assignments during the Cold War and the Vietnam War, including debriefing POWs from Vietnam.  He retired in 1987 at the rank of Commander.

Joe attended Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, earned a B.S. degree from Seton Hall College in New Jersey, and earned an MBA from Rutgers University’s School of Business.  He worked for over 33 years for Eastern Airlines serving in various middle-management positions, including in public relations (where he served as editor of “The Great Silver Fleet,”) and in the maintenance division, where he was responsible for Eastern’s return to silver jets in the 70’s, primarily to lessen the weight of planes and save fuel costs.

Joe and Sally raised their children in Miami.  They were among the group of founding parishioners of St. Timothy’s Catholic Church and Joe helped build the original church.  They were active in the church community and with the St. Vincent De Paul Society.

After living in Miami for 30 years, Joe moved with Sally to Vero Beach, FL, where he served the city and Indian River County as an election official, on the Code Enforcement Board, and on the Planning and Zoning Boards.  He was also an active member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church’s Choir, the St. Vincent DePaul Society, the Irish-American Society, the Naval Reserve Association, the Military Officers Association of America, and Tin Can Sailors.  During his retirement, Joe biked and swam into his 80s. Up to the age of 92, he volunteered at the Indian River Hospital and the Victory Center Military Store in Vero Beach.

Joe is survived by his sons Joseph (Judy), and Robert (Kay), daughter Rosemary Burke Spellacy (Thomas); grandchildren Erin Dowdy, Kevin Spellacy (Raquel), Brian Burke (Karin Friederic), Daniel Spellacy (Becky), Matthew Hess, Halee and Piper Burke, and Michael and Mary LaLiberte; great-grandchildren Max and Megan Hess; Rebecca, Logan, Lucy, and Etta Spellacy; and Nico Burke; much loved sisters-in-law Irene Rossi and Sharon Cass, and brother-in-law Bill Cass; son-in-law Michael Dowdy and daughter-in-law Lynda LaLiberte; as well generations of nieces, nephews shipmates and friends.

Visitation will be held at Strunk Funeral Home, 916 17th Street, Vero Beach, FL 32960 on August 16, 2022 from 4-7pm.  Joe will be eulogized during the visitation, which will be live-streamed.

Joe’s funeral will take place at Holy Cross Catholic Church on August 17, 2022 at 9:30am, followed by committal services at Crestlawn Cemetery with military honors.

Eunice Kay LeVan Yanoviak, 87, Sebastian

September 9, 1934 – August 8, 2022

Mrs. Eunice Kay LeVan Yanoviak, 87, of Sebastian, Florida passed away Monday, August 8, 2022, at VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach, Florida.

Eunice was born in Woodstown, New Jersey to the late Daniel and Muriel Kessler LeVan.  In 2021, Eunice moved to Sebastian from Milton, Pennsylvania, having formerly lived in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania, where she resided when her husband passed.

She and her husband had owned the Village Sandwich Shop in Malvern, Pennsylvania before retiring.  Eunice had worked part time as a travel agent as well. Prior to Frank’s passing, they enjoyed many travel adventures together. A favorite place for them to visit was the land of Israel.

A woman of strong Christian values, she served in many church activities as well as community children’s activities.  When able, Eunice could be found involved in many knitting projects.

Survivors include sons Francis (Frank) Yanoviak and his wife, Pam of Sebastian and Brian D. Yanoviak and his wife, Angie of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, daughter Deborah Karkoska and her husband, John, granddaughters Elisha Karkoska, Candace Beckley (Sam), Kyria Gaydosh (Michael), Megan Heckman (Joc) and Erin Champion (Paul), grandson Joshua Yanoviak (Brittney), great-granddaughters Maggie Beckley and Lucy Heckman, great grandsons Zachary Yanoviak and Eythan Gaydosh, sister Joan Keller, and sister-in-laws Nancy LeVan and Edna LeVan

She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Yanoviak, brothers Jay LeVan and Donald LeVan, grandson Benjamin Yanoviak, and brother-in-law Arlan Keller.

Patricia Helen Hill (Sebert)

August 6, 2022

Patricia Helen Hill (Sebert) passed away Saturday, August 6, 2022.  Born in Coventry, CT, Pat was a daughter of the late Robert and Helen Sebert.  As a teenager Pat moved to Detroit where she met the love of her life, Kenneth Hill, to whom she was married for 59 years.

Pat was a Guardian Ad Litem for 10 years, a dedicated volunteer at Osceola Magnet School (winning Senior Volunteer of the Year for Indian River County Schools in 2015) and spent countless hours helping children in the Winners Walk Tall program. Pat was an active member of The Community Church of Vero Beach and was devoted to her Christ Care group for 20 years. Pat and Ken helped sponsor two families from Vietnam, who became part of the extended family over the past 4 decades. Pat enjoyed many years of travel with Ken, by boat and motorhome.  Pat practiced the mantra of “Do Good and Be Good.”  She believed that actions spoke louder than words and lived in those actions as a quiet steward of God’s Grace.  Proving that by being good and doing good, she could change lives for the better.  Thank you, mom!  Your work on earth is done and you have left it a much better place for many people!

She is survived by three children, Rob (Antoinette) and their children Chris, Jake, Rory & Katie; Mark (Janet) and their children Brandon, Jonathan & Michael; Cindy and her children Jalyn, Bennett, Denly & Merritt; and a sister Vivian Kennedy.  In addition to her parents, Pat is preceded in death by her brother Ronald Sebert.

The service for Patricia will be on Sunday, August 21st, 2022 at 1PM at The Community Church of Vero Beach.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.
