Hundreds of water enthusiasts joined in on a July Fourth tradition that began more than 40 years ago – Race to the Wreck. Folks swam, kayaked, paddled and snorkeled their way out to the wreck of the SS Breconshire to toast America’s birthday.

The Boiler Wreck, as it is referred to by most locals, sank in 1894 and rests in about 15 feet of water less than one-quarter mile from Sexton Beach. Having become home to local fish and sea creatures, it is a popular dive spot. The armada of patriotic participants gave a champagne toast to the American flag planted on the wreck, reveling in the freedoms they enjoy in our patch of paradise.
