Four more students arrested after Friday fight at Oslo Middle School

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — At least four more students have been arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges following a large fight Friday at Oslo Middle School, sheriff’s officials said. The incident – which continued into the principal’s office – left a school staff member with a minor knee injury.

Five students ended up being arrested, including a girl who was detained on Friday. The other four students, three girls and one boy, were arrested this week, Indian River County sheriff’s officials said.

The juveniles charged were all eighth graders. Two students were charged with felony battery on a school official and three were arrested for misdemeanor disruption of a school function.

It was unclear if the youth were taken to a juvenile detention center or turned over to guardians. It was not immediately known if more arrests were expected.

Several students began to fight at 2:48 p.m. Friday during dismissal between the 100 and 900 buildings at the campus, 480 20th Avenue Southwest, reports show. School District of Indian River County spokesperson Cristen Maddux said the fights did not disrupt other students from being dismissed.

Two sheriff’s deputies initially responded to assist the school resource officer in detaining the students before more officers arrived.

One student broke free from a deputy’s grip and ran into the 100 wing of the building. Other students followed the youth.

A deputy ran behind them. The deputy said the students “continued to fight when they got into the principal’s office,” reports show.

“I grabbed student (redacted) who would not stop fighting,” the deputy said in a report. The deputy said he took the student to a side office where the youth eventually calmed down.

The deputy said Principal Eddie Robinson held a student down in his office. The student would not calm down and was trying to get away from Robinson, reports show.

The deputy was able to handcuff the student. A sheriff’s report showed a student put his hands on a teacher after the instructor pushed the student away from getting into the 100 building, where the fights were continuing.

Deputies eventually detained the students and dispersed the crowd. The incident remains under investigation.
