INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A student is facing charges including battery on a school official and resisting arrest following a large fight Friday at Oslo Middle School, sheriff’s officials said. A school staff member was treated on scene for a minor knee injury, Indian River County Fire Chief David Johnson said.
The fight involved six kids, but it was unclear if all were students at Oslo Middle School, School District of Indian River County spokesperson Cristen Maddux said. Maddux said the fights did not disrupt dismissal.
It was unclear if any serious injuries were reported.
The fights come more than two weeks after a brawl at Vero Beach High School Freshman Learning Center where 16 students were arrested.
Friday’s incident involving multiple fights happened at 2:48 p.m. at Oslo Middle School, just north of 5th Street Southwest, Indian River County sheriff’s spokesperson Keith Carson said. School resource deputies already stationed at the campus helped to break up the fights as more patrol officers drove to the scene.
Carson said several school staff were injured but declined medical treatment.
No deputies were injured and no weapons were involved, Carson said. Carson said the student arrested was a minor, but the person’s age and gender were not immediately available.
The age and gender of the injured staff member who required medical treatment was also not available.
The location on campus where the fights occurred was unclear. It was not immediately known if more arrests were expected.
Sheriff’s deputies will continue to investigate the cause of the fights on Monday.
