Harold ‘Hal’ Earl Waitt, 87, Barefoot Bay

July 10, 1934 – January 5, 2022

Harold ‘Hal’ Earl Waitt, 87, of Square Pond in Acton, Maine & Barefoot Bay, FL. passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2022 after a long, hard fought battle with COPD, with his loving wife, Elizabeth, by his side at home in Barefoot Bay, FL.

Harold is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty (nee Pierson) Waitt, daughter Kathy Lavoie and her husband, Ron of Lake Wales, FL, Mickey Waitt and his wife Gerri of Acton, ME., and Ken Waitt and his wife Rosa of Clermont, FL; 9 grandchildren: Kevin Kapton of Hopkinton, NH., Kyle Knapton and his wife Chelsea of Hillsboro, NH., Ross Lavoie and his fiancé Nikki Albright of Webster, MA; Danny Waitt and his wife Anna, Annemarie McMurray and her husband Craig, Kristen Waitt all of Acton, ME; Daniella Portela and her husband Jose-Emilio, Nikki Waitt, Julia Waitt all of Clermont FL; and 8 great granddaughters.  He was looking forward to welcoming another great grandchild this summer.  He also leaves nieces, nephews and several cousins.

Hal lost his mother, Nora, at the age of 12 and was raised by his grandparents, Justin and Maggie Waitt, and his Uncle Walter in Lynn, MA.  He graduated from St. Mary’s High School with the class of 1953.  He met and married the love of his life, Betty Pierson in 1956.  He furthered his education at Wentworth Institute in Boston, MA and found his passion as a machinist at W.S. Bessett Inc., in Lynn, MA.  He purchased the company in 1970, moved the business to Maine in 1982, and grew it into a national organization.  He was so proud of Mickey & Gerri for continuing his legacy and now grandson, Dan, who is keeping the business in the family for a 3rd generation!

Hal dedicated his life to his family, business and civic activities.  He was involved in the Square Pond Improvement Association, Square Pond Water Ski Club, Rotary, Elks and the Knights of Columbus. He especially loved golf, snowmobiling, waterskiing, sports in general and winning at the casinos.  He was a big fan of New England sports teams, especially the Patriots.

Hal was a mentor to many.  He loved sharing his passion for his business, his love of all things Square Pond, and his children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments.  He was well liked and respected by all who met him.

The family would like to thank all of Hal’s care givers: Maine Hospice, Vitas Hospice of Florida – especially his nurse, Percy, and Lyn’s Home Help, Inc. Per his request, there will be no services at this time. A celebration of life will be held this summer in Maine.
