INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The local humane society welcomed 15 dogs that were rescued Wednesday night from a major animal cruelty case in West Helena, Arkansas, nonprofit agency officials said.
The dogs will receive medical care, one-on-one attention, rehabilitation and a 14-day quarantine so they can be ready for adoption, Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County officials said. The breeds of the dogs were not immediately available.
It was unclear if any of the canines suffered serious injuries.
“These voiceless victims need to be cared for, and our shelter is grateful to be able to provide assistance to these pets in need,” said Kate Meghji, the humane society’s Chief Executive Officer. “We will do everything in our power to give these dogs all the love and care that they deserve and find them loving families.”
The case in Arkansas involved more than 300 animals living in “unspeakable conditions,” agency officials said. The name of the facility – which has since closed – where the pets were housed was not available.
Several other animal care organizations, including The BISSELL Pet Foundation, Animal Rescue Corps, Cabot Animal Services, Humane Society of Tulsa and Nashville Humane Society, all helped to coordinate the rescue of the 300 animals. The groups provided emergency care, health testing, microchipping and more for the pets.
SPCA Florida Adoption Center, an animal shelter based in Lakeland, helped to transport the dogs to the local humane society late Wednesday, officials said.
“Our team jumped into action to make sure they received all the care they needed before settling in, safely, for the night,” local humane society officials said. “Teamwork and love make all things possible for pets in need.
