Warren Thomas “Tommy” Herndon, 79, Fellsmere
February 15, 1942 – September 23, 2021
Warren Thomas Herndon
“Tommy Herndon”
Warren Thomas “Tommy” Herndon, 79, of Fellsmere, passed away Thursday, September 23, 2021, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Tommy was born on February 15, 1942, in Adrian, Georgia and moved to Florida with his family as a young child and was a lifelong resident.
As a teenager and throughout his early years, Tommy enjoyed working cattle with his daddy, Herbert Herndon. He joined the United States Army at the age of 17 specializing in communications and served his Country for 8 years. He was a member of the 101st Airborne Division and attained the rank of Sergeant. He often spoke of his tours in Germany and Korea and spoke fluent German.
After return from the service, Tommy waited tables at the Melbourne Yacht Club, part time while working as the Lead Man (Supervisor) at Sorobon Computer Company/ Mohawk Data Sciences in Melbourne, Florida and Herkimer, New York. Ultimately, Tommy traded his shirts and ties for rubber boots and slickers to pursue his true passion, the commercial crabbing industry. He went to work for his Uncle Astor Lord, who taught him the trade. Tommy was a Commercial Crabber for more than 50 years. He loved being on the water and knew it better than any other. Tommy crabbed the Florida waters from Jacksonville south the Everglades and owned a successful seafood business, which provided blue crabs to restaurants throughout the State of Florida for more than 50 years.
Tommy was the definition of hard working man. He loved working. He was loyal, honest, generous and genuine. If you knew Tommy Herndon, you had a friend for life and you loved him.
Tommy’s love for his family was large and fierce and they loved him back the same way. Tommy was affectionally known to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as” Pop”. The only thing Tommy held more dearly than crabbing and fishing was passing on that love and passion to his two grandsons, Shane, Tyler and their son’s, Wyatt and Tristan whom Tommy called “His Boys” and known to family as “Pop’s Boys”. Shane, Tyler, Wyatt and Tristan all share the love for the water and being on it with their “Pop”. They were his pride and joy. He was not only their mentor but was like a father to his boys. Tommy passed his blue crabbing legacy and business on to Shane and his son Wyatt, whom he spent countless hours with on the water. He also spent many hours sitting in his ole barn building crab traps and telling the amazing stories of his life to his family and friends. Tommy enjoyed the many visits from his Grandson Matthew, which gave him the opportunity to share many stories of his life and history. Pop often referred to Matthew as his “little man” with and old soul. Tommy had one great-granddaughter, Harper Lillian whom he referred to as his “beautiful sweetheart”. He loved his “beautiful sweetheart” dearly.
Tommy is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Barbara Herndon, of Fellsmere; his sister Marjorie (Clyde) Yates of Fellsmere, his Children, Barbara Meyers of Quitman, Georgia, Kimberly (Michael) Dean, of Fellsmere, Thomas S. (Marie) Herndon of Vero Beach, his grandsons Shane (Vyvianna) Herndon of Fellsmere, Tyler (Deanna) Herndon of Palm Bay, Matthew Dean of Fellsmere. His great-grandchildren Wyatt Parker Herndon, Tristan Andrew Herndon and Harper Lillian Herndon, many nieces, great nieces and cousins.
Tommy was proceeded in death by his mother and father Herbert and Elise Herndon his nephew Herbert Lawrence Yates.
A pot luck celebration of life will be held at The Grant Historical House “Fishermans Landing” and Pavilions located at 5795 US-1, Grant-Valkaria, Florida 32949, on October 16, 2021 @ 1:00 p.m.
