SEBASTIAN — A 78-year-old bicyclist was killed after being struck by a pickup truck late Friday, sheriff’s officials said. The two-vehicle collision closed County Road 512 in both directions for several hours.
The identities of the bicyclist, a woman, and the pickup driver, a 52-year-old man, were not released. Details on the towns the woman and man are from were not available.
Sebastian police initially responded to the scene, but the case was eventually turned over to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s officials said the crash happened after 9 p.m. at C.R. 512 between Delaware Avenue and Easy Street, west of U.S.1. Details on what led to the crash were not available.
Sheriff’s officials said the pickup driver initially left the scene, but returned.
Officers closed east and westbound lanes on C.R. 512 in the immediate area, according to police. Police advised motorists to avoid the area.
The roadway reopened by 2 a.m. Saturday, police said.
