About half of Indian River County’s 65-and-over population has received at least one COVID-19 shot, according to county administrator Jason Brown.

Brown told county commissioners Tuesday that more than 27,000 residents have been vaccinated, including more than 4,600 in the past week.  He said some 12,000 have registered on the county’s wait list for vaccination appointments.

A glitch with the county’s call center last week left some seniors who were using analog home phones to get appointments in limbo, but Brown said the problem has been fixed.

In total, he said, 27,528 local residents, or 17.5 percent of the total population. have received shots– higher than the statewide average of about 11 percent.

“We are going faster, better, stronger than the state overall,” Brown told commissioners.

Added commissioner Joe Earman:  “We’re not out of the woods, but the trees are a lot thinner.  I think we can get through this.”
