Children immersed themselves in lagoon science recently during an Environmental Learning Center STEAM Explorer Weekend Workshop, sponsored by the Indian River County Children’s Services Advisory Committee.
Using four of their five senses (they skipped taste) to observe nature, youngsters explored the ELC campus, delving into activities that were designed to engage Pre-K through first-graders in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) principles.
“The children work alongside their caregivers as they explore the ELC using all of their senses to make observations – just like a scientist,” said Amy Shea, ELC environmental educator.
“This is one of many weekend workshops that will each be gauged to meet the developmental needs of different age groups. All workshops will focus on STEAM topics through a unique environmental lens using the ELC campus as a living laboratory.”
In the shallow pond habitat, children used dip nets to scoop up some of its smallest residents before taking a closer look at them through magnifying glasses. Minnows, snails, crabs and a spider were among the creatures spotted during that part of the adventure.
During a sensory stroll, the children watched a turtle munching on breakfast and glimpsed birds soaring over their heads; touched various leaves, snails and trees; smelled the salt marsh; and listened to the call of an osprey.
Nature rubbings finished off the activities, with little ones using leaves, sticks and shells they had discovered. They showed their love of nature by crafting “heart art” using items they had picked up along the way.
Visitors to the 64-acre ELC can hike on boardwalks along mangrove trails, take pontoon tours and guided kayak adventures in and around the campus or visit its informative Discovery Station Interactive Museum. Open to the public and bursting with native flora and fauna, the mission of the nonprofit is to educate, inspire and empower all people to be active stewards of the environment and their own well-being.
