The Women’s Refuge of Vero Beach kicked off a series of Holiday Soirées recently at the home of Bill and Pat Marine, with co-hosts Tim and Becky Calahan. Guests were invited to “dine with us” as they learned about the Refuge and its programs and services that support women struggling spiritually, mentally and emotionally.

Noah Sims, who placed fourth in season 10 of the MasterChef television competition, whipped up some spicy goodness in this first of the intimate gatherings and virtual auctions taking place throughout the holiday season.

Sims’ dinner showcased a Mexican-themed menu with various salsas, jalapeno coleslaw, mojo chicken and cumin-soy steak. Upcoming soirées run the culinary gamut from lunches and barbeques, to afternoon teas and after-dinner coffees with dessert.

Sims said his goal was to “make some big, bold, beautiful flavors” to support the nonprofit.

“These women are not getting a fair shake because someone is messing with their life. The Women’s Refuge helps them to have options so they can help themselves and don’t have to rely on others,” said Sims.

Following dinner, guests watched a film featuring testimonials from women who have been assisted by the organization.

“I look at the women that have been in our program, and I see the transformation that has taken place. The Women’s Refuge is unique because every part of a woman’s life is given rest and renewal,” said Pat Marine, noting that when they leave, the women are better equipped to face what life holds. “The Women’s Refuge gives women tools to be able to deal with all of the situations that happen.”

“What makes the Women’s Refuge different than a lot of other mental health programs is that we are Christian-based. I believe in the hope and healing that we can find in Christ,” added Becky Calahan.

In a recorded message, Diane Ludwig, Women’s Refuge executive director, addressed attendees.

“The idea for our holiday soirées was born out of the challenge we are all facing with the coronavirus pandemic,” she said. “Our goal to promote the ministry of the Women’s Refuge is being accomplished by hosting small, intimate parties in our homes, where guests can safely social distance, enjoy fellowship with one another, and share a meal.”
