VBHS student tests positive for virus; others to quarantine

Vero Beach High School reported its fifth incident of a student testing positive for COVID-19 Sunday. As a result, 12 other students and a staff member were placed on a two-week quarantine, school officials said.

There are now 21 incidents involving virus cases reported at traditional schools in Indian River County. There have been 22 incidents reported overall at local campuses.

To date, 359 students and 12 staff members have been placed on two-week quarantines since the start of the school year.

In the latest case, Florida Department of Health conducted contact tracing at Vero Beach High School. Health officials identified 12 students and one staff member who came in close contact with the student with a positive test, according to the School District of Indian River County.

School officials called the families of the students and told them the youth would need to stay home and monitor their symptoms. The staff member, and student with a positive test, were also instructed to self-quarantine, school officials said.

The students will continue school through virtual learning.

All Vero Beach High School families and staff members were also notified of the incident. Custodial services continue to disinfect and sanitize all areas of the campus.
