INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A student at Vero Beach High School and another at Liberty Magnet School tested positive for COVID-19, prompting officials to place 20 students on quarantine Friday.

There are now 20 incidents involving virus cases reported at traditional schools in Indian River County. There have been 21 incidents overall reported at local campuses.

Vero Beach High School reported its fourth incident of a student testing positive for COVID-19, while Liberty Magnet School reported its first case.

To date, 346 students and 11 staff members have been placed on two-week quarantines since the start of the school year.

In the latest two cases, Florida Department of Health conducted contact tracing, according to the School District of Indian River County. Health officials identified five students who had close contact with the student with a positive test at Vero Beach High School, and 13 students and three staff members who had close contact with the pupil at Liberty Magnet School, an elementary campus.

School officials contacted the families of the students and notified them the youth would need to stay home for two weeks and monitor their symptoms, officials said. The students who tested positive were also instructed to stay home.

The students will continue school through virtual learning, officials said.

Families and staff members at both schools were notified of the incidents. Custodial services continue to disinfect and sanitize all areas of the campuses.
