A Sebastian River High School student tested positive for COVID-19, prompting school officials to place nine other pupils on a two-week quarantine, authorities said.
Officials learned of the positive case Thursday, according to a School District of Indian River County news release. School officials worked with the Florida Department of Health to conduct contact tracing, which is a method of tracking who the infected student came in contact with.
Authorities identified nine students who came in close contact with the pupil who tested positive, officials said. The nine students, along with the student with a positive test, will need to quarantine for 14 days and monitor their symptoms.
School officials called the families of the nine students and instructed them to quarantine, officials said. All Sebastian River High School families and staff members were notified of the incident through a school messenger call.
The quarantined students will continue their education through virtual learning, school officials said. Custodial services continue to disinfect and sanitize the campus to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
This is the fourth incident at Indian River County schools where youth were instructed to quarantine for two weeks after students tested positive for the virus. The three other schools that have reported positive COVID-19 cases were Vero Beach High School, Osceola Magnet School and Fellsmere Elementary.
Indian River County had a cumulative amount of 2,871 COVID-19 cases Thursday, according to the Florida Department of Health. Health officials reported 103 COVID-19 related deaths in the county so far.
