A man busy loading a bag into his car after playing golf at the Vista Royale course on Woodland Drive was robbed of his golf cart and golf clubs Wednesday.
According to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, the victim was loading his car when the suspect jumped onto his golf cart and drove away. The man yelled after the suspect to bring it back, but the suspect did not.
The golf cart is a gas-powered Yamaha valued at $8,000. The golf clubs on the cart were valued at $1,100, the Sheriff’s Office noted in the arrest report.
Eleven minutes later, the suspect was spotted driving the golf cart north through the golf course and was identified as Jermaine Akins, 36, of Port St. Lucie.
A responding deputy made contact with Akins at 89 Crooked Tree Lane, within Vista Royale, who had been cornered by several people who either live there or were golfing there.
The deputy tried to arrest Akins, but he pulled his arm away and attempted to run. The deputy was able to put Akins on the ground, who continued to actively resist and try to get up.
One of the witnesses assisted the deputy in bringing Akins under control until backup law enforcement arrived.
Akins was then taken into custody without further incident.
Akins faces charges that include felony grand theft auto and grand theft, and misdemeanor resisting arrest without violence. He is currently being held at the county jail in lieu of $11,000 bail.
