Noted ecology researcher Leesa Souto will discuss the protection and restoration of the Indian River Lagoon at the Nov. 9 luncheon meeting of the Democratic Women’s Club of Indian River County.
The executive director of the Marine Resources Council, Dr. Souto leads a team investigating the complex linkages between land-based human actions and water quality.
The results of such research help the environmental organization address policy questions and guide strategic actions in its mission to improve quality and habitats in the lagoon, surrounding coastal waters, inshore reefs and the watershed.
Souto described the non-profit Marine Resources Council as focused on engaging the community in the agency’s quest to bring the lagoon to health through science based restoration, education and advocacy.
Souto’s professional career spans more than 20 years working to improve Florida’s water quality.
Prior to joining the Marine Resources Council, she was affiliated with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Brevard County Natural Resources Management Office and the University of Central Florida.
She received her bachelor’s degree in biology from Florida State University, and earned a master’s degree in nonprofit management and her doctorate in conservation biology with expertise in urban ecology from the University of Central Florida.
