Freedom is fleeting for man nabbed in jail parking lot

A man who bonded out of jail was quickly returned after authorities saw him steal several items from various cars in the jail parking lot.

Casey Michael Lewis, 34, of Stuart was re-arrested and booked – again – into the St. Lucie County Jail on April 4 on felony charges that include larceny, possession of a stolen driver’s license, and burglary of a vehicle.

Lewis was observed “walking around the parking lot acting suspicious and checking vehicle doors,” the arrest report stated.

Reviewing security footage, deputies saw Lewis looking into cars and trying doors. At one point, he entered one vehicle and sat in the driver’s seat for more than 2 minutes before exiting.

Lewis then walked around the lot more, continuing to check vehicles as he passed.

A deputy who approached Lewis found a brown paper bag in his possession containing more than $500 cash, an iPhone, four packs of cigarettes, a debit card and a Florida license not issued to him.

The deputy placed him under arrest and he was booked back into the county jail.
